MIAMI DADE COUNTY AND FRIENDS OF THE UNDERLINE BREAK GROUND ON PHASE 1 OF THE
UNDERLINE: BRICKELL BACKYARD
Miami, FL (October) – On Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, Miami-Dade County and Friends of The Underline will break ground on the first phase of The Underline – The Brickell Backyard.
“We have been working with the community, Miami-Dade County, the City of Miami and FDOT for over a year on the Brickell Backyard design and procurement” said Friends of The Underline founder Meg Daly. “The Underline is the first urban trail in the country connecting to existing transit providing an off road facility to walk and bike to transit, school, work, shopping and other destinations.”
The Underline is a 10-mile linear park and mobility corridor below the Metrorail guideway. The proposed corridor will extend from the Miami River to the Dadeland South Metrorail station, and will serve to enhance connectivity, increase mobility, improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety and public health.
This project will be built in phases. Phase I – The Brickell Backyard – is a half-mile long segment below the Metrorail that extends from the Brickell station to the Miami River. It will have many
amenities, including a gym area that consists of a flexible basketball/soccer court, gym equipment, and provides space for group classes and activities; there will also be a community stage, gaming tables, outdoor dining room and dog parks. The Underline features native vegetation and the first phase will have four butterfly gardens. To improve street crossings, high visibility crosswalks will be featured at SW 7th, 8th and 13th streets.
Miami-based leaders in affordable and market rate housing, Pinnacle Communities, is the first private contributor to public art on The Underline. Led by founding partner and fourth generation Floridian Louis Wolfson III, Pinnacle Communities sponsored the six inaugural artist-designed Metrorail columns within the future Brickell Backyard. Four are located at the Brickell station accessible to Brickell View Terrace, Pinnacle’s mixed-use/mixedincome multi-family rental community. Featured artists include Anthony Ardavin, Kyle Holbrook, Rey Jaffet, Robert McKnight, and Kench (a.k.a. Kenneth DeGeorge As the anchor sponsor of public art at The Underline, Pinnacle hopes to inspire other businesses and artists to sponsor and beautify the remaining 400+ columns along The Underline.
“There’s so much synergy with Pinnacle’s Art in Public Places program and The Underline project, both provide a platform for public art to transform communities. It only made sense that we partnered to unveil the first of what we hope to be many designed columns from some of Miami’s most talented rising artists,” said Louis Wolfson III, founding partner of Pinnacle Communities.
Following the groundbreaking, Swire Properties will host a reception at Miami’s premier Italian food hall, La Centrale in Brickell City Centre.
