2025 National Dominican Day Parade: A Celebration of Culture, Unity, and Community
On Sunday, August 10, 2025, New York City’s streets pulsed with music, color, and joy as the annual National Dominican Day Parade returned, delighting thousands of spectators. This year’s festivities kicked off an hour earlier than usual, with the parade starting promptly at 11:00 AM.
The route stretched along the heart of Manhattan, beginning at 36th Street and traveling up Sixth Avenue all the way to 55th Street. The theme for 2025 , “Quisqueya & USA: United by Culture and Tradition” , captured the spirit of unity between the Dominican Republic and the United States, emphasizing the shared values, vibrant heritage, and mutual pride that bind both nations.
Honoring a Baseball Legend with a Heart of Gold
Leading the procession as Grand Marshal was Nelson Cruz, a seven-time MLB All-Star celebrated not only for his outstanding athletic achievements but also for his commitment to giving back. Through his Boomstick23 Foundation, Cruz has supported vital health and education programs in the Dominican Republic, making a profound difference in countless lives. His presence brought an added sense of inspiration and pride to the day’s events.
A Parade Alive with Culture
The parade brought together over 10,000 participants, ranging from community groups and student organizations to elaborate floats and professional performers. The atmosphere along Sixth Avenue was electric, with crowds cheering, waving flags, and dancing in step with the music.
Lively performances of merengue, bachata, and salsa kept the energy high, while traditional attire added splashes of bold, vibrant color to the scene. Costumes ranged from folkloric dresses to more theatrical outfits representing Dominican carnival traditions. Among the most striking appearances was the “Diablo Cojuelo” , the mischievous Limping Devil , a beloved symbol of Dominican folklore whose exaggerated masks, bright fabrics, and playful antics brought smiles to children and adults alike.
Every float and performance seemed to tell a story , of history, migration, resilience, and the joy of cultural pride. From handcrafted cultural displays to modern, high-energy dance troupes, the parade was both a tribute to tradition and a celebration of contemporary Dominican-American life.
Navigating the Streets
To make room for the grand procession, multiple streets in Midtown were closed to traffic:

Formation Area: Sixth Avenue between 37th and 38th Streets; 36th Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue; 37th and 38th Streets between Fifth and Seventh Avenues

Many experienced parade-goers had arrived early to claim prime viewing spots along the route. Public transportation was the most reliable option, as nearby road closures and heavy pedestrian traffic made driving challenging.
Safety at the Forefront
After safety concerns in prior years, the NYPD increased its presence for the 2025 event. 957 uniformed officers Ve 140 traffic agents were stationed throughout the area, along with K9 units, drone surveillance teams, and specialized units from Emergency Services Ve Counterterrorism divisions. These measures ensured a safe and family-friendly environment, allowing everyone to enjoy the day’s festivities with peace of mind.

Beyond the dazzling costumes and rhythmic beats, the National Dominican Day Parade has long been a force for good within the community. Since 2015, the organization has awarded over $1 million in scholarships to more than 200 students across 20 states, empowering Dominican youth to pursue higher education and realize their dreams.
This year’s parade served as both a celebration of Dominican culture and a reminder of the importance of giving back, uniting generations in a shared commitment to heritage, education, and progress.
