In Isamu Noguchi’s Sunken Garden, Tory Burch made the case that opulent femininity and American pragmatism belong in the same wardrobe, and that the best wardrobes take years to build

The green granny sweater came cinched at the waist, its purple flocked embroidery hand-worked until it read like Venetian wallpaper. Beneath it, a blue quilted viscose satin skirt. Flanking it, two paper poplin tie-dye embroidered dresses in bright purple and orange. That was the “overdrive” palette Burch used to open her spring 2027 ready-to-wear show, and it set the terms for a collection that refused to choose between the streamlined and the romantic.
The thinking underneath it is a collector’s approach, which is how Burch framed her state of mind this season. “And the psychology of how women pull things together, keep things and build on them to create wardrobes over time,” she said during a preview. “It’s opulent femininity meets American pragmatism, so I focused a lot more on textures and still twisting American sportswear, but pushing it further.”
She has been developing this subject for several years. Spring, set within the Sunken Garden by Isamu Noguchi, showed she has plenty more to say about it. The lineup worked through experimental colorblocking, rich textures, eccentric details and accessories, with silhouettes that bridged arty and timeless to the now.
Tailoring and the Sport of It
Tailoring anchored one end. Confident wool and linen military dresses and Savile Row-inspired suits gave the collection its backbone. Against them, Tory Burch placed sporty, color-blocked pieces: crop-sleeve wool knit Henleys with pleated skirts, strongest in tomato red and grape purple, and viscose knit polos paired with funky “terry” velvet striped trousers. Romance ran through experimentation with draping and vintage-y dresses, while fluffy silk boas added something to even the simplest topcoats. Plenty of looks worth collecting.
A 45-45 Business
Footwear may have been the season’s quiet win. “I have to say our footwear are probably my favorite shoes we’ve done,” Burch said. The assortment ran from 1980s-like pumps with extended outsoles wrapped around the heels to handwoven leather slingbacks and colorful slip-ons with ornate embellishments.
The mix explains the attention. Footwear accounts for around 45 percent of the business, with another 45 percent in handbags. Spring’s bags answered in kind: new small Lee shopper totes alongside evolutions of the Bunny Knot styles, leather handwoven basket totes and the Lee Radziwill range.
Read those two numbers together, and they are 90 percent of Tory Burch. That is why the shoes earn a runway moment of their own rather than a supporting role, and why a handwoven slingback is treated with the same seriousness as a Savile Row suit. The collector’s approach, it turns out, is not only for the customer. It is how the house assembles a business.
Burch is on a roll. With spring, she presented powerful femininity through joyful, desirable wardrobing, treating a wardrobe as something built over time. One look at a time.
