LIE SANGBONG
Lie Sang Bong (이상봉, born January 25, 1955) is a pioneering South Korean fashion designer and founder of the eponymous fashion house LIE SANGBONG, established in 1985 after winning the Central Design Contest. Trained in broadcasting at the Seoul Institute of the Arts before turning to fashion in the mid-1970s, he made his runway debut with “The Reincarnation” at Seoul Fashion Week in 1993 and has since been a fixture at Seoul, Paris and New York Fashion Weeks. His work is known for a bold fusion of traditional Korean culture and calligraphy with Western modernism and avant-garde sensibilities – inspirations range from Bauhaus architecture and Korean folk painting to French elegance.
Lie has been honored as “Designer of the Year” by the Seoul mayor and has dressed celebrities including Lady Gaga; his collections are featured in Vogue Korea, Elle and international editorials. In 2023 he unveiled a collection inspired by Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” at Seoul Fashion Week and later at Vienna’s Belvedere Museum for its 300th anniversary. He has participated in Concept Korea presentations at New York Fashion Week and remains a leading ambassador for Korean fashion globally, closing day one of Seoul Fashion Week 2027 S/S with the 19:30 prime-time slot.
