Rebellion has always been London Fashion Week’s calling card. Where Paris offers heritage and Milan commercial polish, London built its reputation on raw, experimental talent that refused to play by anyone else’s rules.
London Fashion Week began in a Kensington car park, organized by the newly formed British Fashion Council to give British designers – young talents fresh out of art college with huge dreams but very little backing — a stage of their own. Fashion publicist Lynne Franks is widely credited as the driving force behind the idea, having persuaded businessman Mohan Murjani to back the first edition. Early editions featured designers like Vivienne Westwood, Betty Jackson, and John Galliano, who arrived with talent but little industry infrastructure behind them.
The event moved through a string of London landmarks over the decades — from the Duke of York’s Barracks to Olympia, The Ritz, and the Natural History Museum – before eventually settling into a hybrid, digital-physical format. Along the way, 伦敦时装周 became known for its theatrical energy: Alexander McQueen’s robot-sprayed dress, Burberry’s iconic trench relaunch, and Prince jumping onstage at a Matthew Williamson show all became part of its lore.
Today the event brings together heritage houses like Burberry, Mulberry, and Erdem alongside boundary-pushing names such as Harris Reed, Chopova Lowena, Ashley Williams, and S.S. Daley — plus graduate talent spotlighted through platforms supporting emerging British design.
What sets London apart is its willingness to embrace the unconventional — gender-fluid silhouettes, upcycled materials, and designers unafraid to challenge convention over commercial polish. It remains as much a launchpad as a showcase, a place where new voices in 时装 are given room to be heard.
