The Avalanches returns with ‘No Bad Memories,’ a new album inspired by the simultaneously magical and insidious ways that advertising and name-brand technology wrap themselves around our memories. An ambivalent ode to the nostalgic pull of commercial jingles, proprietary start-up sounds, and long-forgotten audio logos.
The best things in life may be free, but childhood and corporate entertainment products are completely intertwined. But where do you draw the line between precious memories and something carefully designed to become unforgettable?
“It’s been interesting as adults to reflect on this often stunning period of marketing – the creativity, filmmaking, photography, and music – but which was also, you know, selling a completely unobtainable dream. The way we value devices and products, the way we reflect and represent ‘a life lived,’ and the wonder of memory and deep power of nostalgia, especially in sound. Revisiting imagery and jingles from childhood and realizing how profoundly they have stuck… Taking these sound sources from within the heart of this kind of corporate framework and flipping the fragments into our own kind of joyous pop music … Eventually we arrived at this world of ‘No Bad Memories.’ – The Avalanches
‘No Bad Memories’ is built on an extraordinary constellation of collaborators, in a similar vein to previous Avalanches LPs ‘Wildflower’ and ‘We Will Always Love You ‘. The new single ‘Can’t Get Over Losing You,’ the fourth taste of the album, showcases Louisiana self-taught producer and artist Portraits of Tracy. The single combines driving garage rock drums with The Avalanches’ signature nostalgic samples and euphoric melodies and vocals from Portraits of Tracy.

‘Can’t Get Over Losing You’ follows the intimate, haunting ‘Blue Shadows’ с участием Karen O, the euphoria & bounce of ‘Every Single Weekend’ с Jamie xx, and glitch-laden, statement-of-intent ‘Together’ с Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, and Prentiss. Self-taught producer, multi-instrumentalist from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Portraits of Tracy has been lauded for her audacious, genre-sprawling projects since emerging in 2023 with her 18-track debut concept record, ‘Drive Home.’ Her latest project, ‘Q: Where Do Our Primal Instincts Originate?” A: MTV!” is a loud and playful glimpse into who I am as a person and a musician, drawing on indelible memories: a childhood spent locked into DC hardcore, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and when MTV reigned supreme.
