Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons imposed a single constraint – the skirt and nothing else – and emerged with one of the most persuasive arguments for reduction the house has made in years

MILAN — The Fondazione Prada was lit flat and cool on Sept. 22: fluorescent, institutional, the kind of light that turns everything into evidence. It was the right setting for what Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons had prepared. Sixty-four looks. Every one of them built around a skirt.

That restraint was the first and most interesting fact of spring 2027. Not the skirt as backdrop or accent – as the garment the collection was organized around before the real work began. The skirt as the work itself. The show notes laid it out plainly: a single garment, interrogated through variation, functioning as “a frame for ceaseless creation.” They meant it. Nothing on that runway suggested they didn’t.

That they succeeded, and mostly with real authority, says something about where the house is right now. This was one of the more assured Prada showings in several seasons – not because individual pieces were spectacular, but because the discipline behind them felt earned rather than constructed. The editors who watched from the banked seating knew the precedent. Prada organized an entire exhibition around the skirt in 2005, first in Shanghai and later in New York, on the premise that the garment from the waist down had been underexamined and was quietly where the most interesting things happened. Twenty years on, spring 2027 returns to that thesis with accumulated conviction.

The range of forms was considerable. Wrap styles with Velcro fastenings embedded in crystal – Prada described the category as among the oldest and least mediated forms of dress in any wardrobe – sat alongside severe pencil silhouettes in transparent fabric scattered with glass rhinestone flowers that clicked faintly as the models moved. Kilt-like wool versions arrived with raw hems and enlarged button hooks, functional hardware pushed past function into ornament. Pleated midi skirts came in faded Easter-egg pastels, the sort of washed-out colorway that reads slightly wrong in exactly the manner Prada has been cultivating for 30 years. A-line shapes in psychedelic print cotton, the house’s “ugly” vernacular, rotated through in reliable rotation.

Against all of that on the lower half, the tops barely competed: bralettes, bandeau cuts, simple cotton shirts, a sweater worn as if whatever came below it was the point – which, of course, it was. In a preview with editors before the show, Prada compared the skirt’s rectangular geometry to a painter’s frame. “So you are obliged to put ideas on the frame,” she said. Simons, somewhat more playful backstage, noted that designing from head to toe leaves little interpretive room – then suggested, laughing, that they might try it anyway next season.

Where earlier co-creative seasons occasionally showed the friction of two strong sensibilities in negotiation, spring 2027 just worked. A crystal-studded wrap skirt pulled at the hip managed to be ladylike and quietly confrontational at the same time. A sheer pleated column, barely opaque at the hem, was austere and frank in equal measure. The house has a word for this condition – contradictions – and the show made a persuasive case for why it keeps returning to it.

The question the collection doesn’t answer, and probably doesn’t need to, is what comes next. The imposed constraint – one garment, dozens of variations, zero deviation – is precisely what makes spring 2027 satisfying as a critical object and slightly contained as an emotional experience. Everything here is legibly Prada. Very little of it pushes past legibility into something unfamiliar. That isn’t a failure. It is, however, a description of a house operating comfortably within its own established logic – which, depending on what you came in wanting from it, reads either as confidence or as a held breath.
