There is a quiet audacity to softness — especially when it arrives at a house long celebrated for its sharp edges. Balenciaga’s Summer 2026 campaign, titled Heart and Body, does not announce itself loudly. It settles, observes, and holds space — and in doing so, marks one of the most deliberate creative pivots the storied Spanish house has seen in years.

A New Creative Vision Under Pierpaolo Piccioli
Since Pierpaolo Piccioli assumed the role of Creative Director at Balenciaga, the question has been how his signature warmth — refined over decades at Valentino — would translate to a house historically defined by intellectual provocation and aesthetic austerity. Heart and Body provides a clear and confident answer.
The campaign’s central thesis is community — not as a marketing concept, but as a genuine creative framework. Piccioli is not interested in uniformity or aesthetic allegiance. The connective tissue here is resonance: the idea that what unites people runs deeper than what distinguishes them.
David Sims Captures Individuals, Not Characters
Shot by David Sims, Heart and Body introduces three new brand ambassadors — Winona Ryder, Roh Yoonseo, and Harris Dickinson — alongside an intentionally eclectic circle of Friends of the House. The full cast includes Danielle Deadwyler, Havana Rose Liu, Hudson Williams, Mona Tougaard, Ned Sims, and Sen Samysheva.
The casting itself is a statement. Faces marked by decades of cultural memory sit alongside emerging talents across film, music, and modeling. Artists, actors, and models share the frame without hierarchy. The press release notes that Piccioli sought “individuals, not characters” — and Sims delivers on that intention with characteristic precision. His lens moves between intimate proximity and considered distance, allowing each subject’s personality to surface without theatrical embellishment.
The Atelier Space: Setting as Philosophy
The campaign’s visual environment is described as a suspended, heterotopic atelier space — an architectural in-between, raw and gridded, evoking the surface of a primed canvas. It is a setting that positions its subjects outside the noise of the everyday, held long enough to be truly seen.
The stillness is devotional. The compositions are structured but never rigid. And layered into the video component, a sonic collage of interviews adds another dimension — conversation over declaration, exchange over broadcast.
The Body as Creative Priority
Piccioli’s treatment of the relationship between body and garment is central to the campaign’s identity. He insists that ease and confidence should define how clothing lives on a person. Volume appears weightless. Tailoring coexists with fluidity. Discipline in the cut gives way to softness in movement.
His guiding principle — that the person wears the clothing, never the reverse — is not a new idea, but its application here subtly reorients Balenciaga’s relationship to power. Authority becomes internal. It derives from the wearer rather than the silhouette’s architecture. That shift is significant for a house whose identity has so often been tied to structural exaggeration.
Each member of the campaign’s cast carries distinct cultural weight. Winona Ryder brings decades of cinematic memory into the frame. Harris Dickinson contributes a contemporary gravity rooted in acclaimed dramatic work. Roh Yoonseo offers a different cultural lens, expanding the campaign’s geographic and generational reach. Around these three anchors, the wider cast fills out the picture.
The effect is cumulative rather than additive. Individuality does not compete — it compounds. Piccioli uses this ensemble to argue that a мода house can be defined by the breadth and depth of its human relationships, not only by the singular vision at its center.
What ‘Heart and Body’ Means for Balenciaga’s Future
Heart and Body represents an ambitious repositioning. Community as a creative value can remain vague when spoken here, but it is made tangible through casting decisions, compositional choices, and a tonal register that prioritizes empathy over spectacle.
The campaign signals that Balenciaga’s next chapter may be built on dialogue. Strength and sensitivity are presented not as opposing forces but as complementary ones. In that alignment, Piccioli articulates a version of the house grounded in people first, image second, and meaning sustained through the relationships between them.
