Actively Black, in partnership with Mielle Organics, hosted a groundbreaking cultural event during Semana de Moda de Nova York at Sony Hall, titled “This Is Not a Fashion Show.” The evening transcended traditional moda presentations, becoming a powerful tribute to Black excellence, legacy, and resilience.

The event featured red carpet appearances by cultural icons, including Lauryn Hill, Dapper Dan, Tyrese, Ghostface Killah, Naturi Naughton, Dascha Polanco, Jamil Hardwick, and Edgerrin James, underscoring the significance of the night.

Inside Sony Hall, the runway transformed into a stage for intergenerational storytelling. Civil rights legacies were honored as Dr. Bernice A. King (daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) and Ilyasah Shabazz (daughter of Malcolm X) walked the runway in collaborative pieces that united two of the most influential families in Black history.

Other historic moments included appearances by Cecil J. Williams, Ruby Bridges, Olympic legends Tommie Smith and John Carlos, and Ben Haith, designer of the Juneteenth flag. Each figure was honored for their enduring contributions to the fight for justice and equality.

“Me being pro-Black doesn’t mean I’m anti anything else,” said Lanny Smith, founder of Actively Black. “Tonight was about honoring our ancestors, uplifting our communities, and reminding the world that our stories, our innovation, and our estilo are indispensable to the global culture.”

The evening also spotlighted artistic collaborations, including:

  • A Basquiat collection led by Lisane Basquiat (sister of Jean-Michel Basquiat)
  • A Bob Marley capsule represented by Sara Marley (granddaughter of Bob Marley and daughter of Lauryn Hill)
  • A Michael Jackson tribute performance inspired by the King of Pop

Celebrating the power of Black women, the “Black Women Are Superheroes” collection featured influential leaders and athletes such as Valeisha Butterfield Jones, T’ea Cooper, Deja Kelly, Bozoma Saint John, Cari Champion, and Monica McNutt.

Additional highlights included:

  • A salute to HBCUs presented by Terrence J
  • A tribute to the Harlem Globetrotters
  • A surprise appearance by AJ & Free, celebrating 25 years of BET’s 106 & Park

Actively Black also announced its partnership with Bridgeforth Farms, a Black-owned cotton farm, ensuring its apparel is made in America using 100% Black-grown cotton.

In a heartfelt finale, founders Lanny Smith and Bianca Winslow shared their most personal collaboration yet—a gender reveal announcing they are expecting a baby boy in December 2025.
