New York Fashion Week has yet to begin in earnest, yet Marc Jacobs has already delivered one of its most quietly commanding statements. On the eve of the official schedule, the designer presented his Spring 2026 collection as a deeply personal reflection on grief, remembrance, and the quiet work of moving forward.

Marc Jacobs Kicks Off NYFW With Spring 2026 Collection

The show was dedicated to his recently deceased friend, Louis. In the program notes, Jacobs wrote:

“Memory. Loss. Surfacing on their own, memories shape, influence, and inform. Free from nostalgia, recovering the past also reminds us that loss is inevitable and that hope is work. Memories, both bittersweet and beautiful, are a faculty of purpose influencing current and future actions—who we are, what we create, what we leave behind, and what we carry forward. We allow our senses and instincts to guide us, respecting the appearance of these thoughts by preserving them.”

The collection itself marked a striking departure from the voluminous silhouettes and ornate glamour that have defined much of Jacobs’ recent output. Restrained, precise, and almost monastic in its clarity, the work felt like a deliberate exhale after years of exuberant volume. Where one might have expected drama, there was instead composure; where excess had once reigned, there was now an almost severe elegance.

Marc Jacobs openly cited his references in the show notes—an unusually candid gesture even for a designer who has never shied away from history. The list included Yves Saint Laurent Couture 1965, Perry Ellis Spring/Summer 1993 (the infamous grunge collection), X-Girl 1994, Stüssy, his own Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 1995 and Spring/Summer 1998 collections, Helmut Lang Fall/Winter 1995, Prada Spring/Summer 1996, Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2003, Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2013, and collaborations with Sofia Coppola. The inclusion of his own archive alongside the work of others spoke volumes: this was not appropriation but acknowledgment, a master laying his influences bare without apology or defensiveness.

The front row reflected the breadth of Jacobs’ cultural reach. Among those present were Anna Wintour, Sidney Toledano, Nicky Hilton, Derek Blasberg, Julia Fox, Ubah Hassan, Eva Chen, Charlotte Groeneveld, Sarah Hoover, June Ambrose, Dani Stahl, and a host of other editors, stylists, and friends who have long formed the designer’s inner circle.

In an industry that often rewards spectacle, Marc Jacobs chose restraint, introspection, and absolute clarity of intent. The result was not loud, but it was impossible to look away from.
