Kozaburo

Kozaburo is the namesake label of designer Kozaburo Akasaka, born in Tokyo in 1984. He graduated from Central Saint Martins with a first-class degree in menswear in 2011, relocating to the US that same year to work with Thom Browne. In 2013, Kozaburo enrolled at Parsons School of Design, leaving in 2016 to launch his namesake label. In 2017, he was awarded the special prize of the LVMH Prize and began presenting during New York Fashion Week the following year.

Since his NYFW debut in 2018, Kozaburo has presented each season, building a reputation for collections that blend traditional Japanese techniques with Americana silhouettes – denim trucker jackets, for example, infused with Japanese craftsmanship. The brand’s conceptual universe draws on mythology, spirituality, and the natural world, with collections referencing Hindu, Aztec, Japanese, and African mythologies. Kozaburo was a finalist for the 2023 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.

He has also launched a minor utility line called Wave of Sand, established the Japanese corporation SAND Co., Ltd., and collaborated with Wrangler and Vibram. For SS27, Kozaburo opens the Tuesday schedule with a two-hour presentation.
