Looking back from 2026, the 'Usual' collection is now recognized as a pivotal moment in Mihara Yasuhiro's ongoing exploration of deconstructed everyday aesthetics, a vision that has continued to influence the brand's more recent runway presentations.

The Concept Behind 'Usual': Deconstructing the Everyday

The title of the Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO 2022 Spring/Summer collection, ‘Usual,’ is at once deceptively simple and philosophically loaded. Mihara Yasuhiro has long operated at the intersection of the ordinary and the extraordinary, and this collection represents one of his most focused meditations on that tension. Rather than reaching for spectacle, the designer turned his lens toward the unremarkable rhythms of daily life, asking what happens when those rhythms are examined, stretched, and recontextualized through the lens of high fashion.

The choice of Tokyo International Airport at Haneda as the film location is deeply telling. An airport is one of the most universal of non-places: a site of transition, anonymity, and compressed human experience. Travelers pass through it carrying the full weight of their routines, their wardrobes, and their identities. By staging the collection within this environment, Mihara positioned his garments not as aspirational objects but as companions to lived experience, clothing that belongs to the world of movement and momentum rather than the static gallery of the runway.

This conceptual grounding gave ‘Usual’ an emotional register that separated it from many of its contemporaries during the Paris Fashion Week cycle. The collection was not about escape; it was about presence.

Design Language and Aesthetic Signatures of the 2022 S/S Presentation

Mihara Yasuhiro’s 2022 Spring/Summer collection continued the brand’s signature practice of distorting familiar garment forms: silhouettes that begin in recognizable territory before drifting into something more ambiguous, fabrics that carry the visual memory of use and wear, and construction techniques that deliberately expose their own seams and processes. The ‘Usual’ collection extended this vocabulary with particular attention to layering and proportion, placing oversized outerwear against slimmer base layers and introducing textural contrasts that rewarded close inspection.

Footwear, always a cornerstone of the Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO identity, played a central role in anchoring the collection’s aesthetic. The brand’s now-iconic approach to sole construction, which references the visual language of aged and distressed athletic shoes, reinforced the collection’s preoccupation with the patina of the everyday. These are not shoes designed to look new; they are designed to look known.

The cast, which included principal figures Takaumi Furuhashi, Keiko, and Mika Sato alongside a sweeping roster of models representing a genuinely diverse range of ages, ethnicities, and body types, further underscored the collection’s democratic ambition. ‘Usual’ was not addressed to a singular ideal of the fashion consumer. It was addressed to everyone who moves through the world in clothing, which is to say, everyone.

Creative Collaborators and the Production Vision

The film presentation format, which Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO embraced with considerable sophistication during this period, allowed for a level of narrative control that a traditional runway show cannot always achieve. Shooting director and editor Tomoyuki Kujirai, working under the NION production banner alongside producer Toshiyuki Takei and production manager Yusuke Tamura, brought a cinematic sensibility to the presentation that elevated it well beyond a straightforward lookbook.

The original music composed and performed by the Japanese math-rock band LITE, featuring Nobuyuki Takeda and Kozo Kusumoto on guitar, Jun Izawa on bass, and Akinori Yamamoto on drums, was a particularly distinctive creative choice. LITE’s intricate, instrumental compositions carry a quality of restrained intensity that mirrored the collection’s own aesthetic: complex beneath a calm surface, rigorous without being cold. Sound engineer Taiki Yoshimi of Art Brain Company ensured that the score was rendered with precision appropriate to its role as a structural element of the presentation rather than mere background accompaniment.

Photographer Keisuke Fujita and hair and makeup artist Kenji Toyota, working on behalf of Shiseido, completed a creative team whose collective commitment to craft matched the designer’s own. Looking back from 2026, the ‘Usual’ collection is recognized as a pivotal moment in Mihara Yasuhiro’s ongoing exploration of deconstructed everyday aesthetics, a vision that has continued to shape the brand’s most recent runway work.
