ISSEY MIYAKE

ISSEY MIYAKE presents on the official calendar as one of the most technically innovative houses in fashion history. Founded by Issey Miyake in 1970 after early experience working alongside Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy in Paris, the house built its reputation on treating fabric technology itself as the primary design tool — most famously through the Pleats Please line, launched in 1993, which used a proprietary heat-pleating process applied after garments were cut and sewn, producing permanently pleated pieces that moved and packed unlike anything else in fashion.

Miyake’s broader design philosophy centered on “a piece of cloth” — the idea that clothing’s relationship to the body, and the space between them, was itself the central creative question, an approach that also produced the A-POC (“A Piece of Cloth”) project developing garments made from a single continuous piece of fabric using computer-programmed knitting technology. Miyake passed away in 2022, but the house he founded has continued under a design collective and successive creative leadership committed to extending his technical research rather than treating his death as an endpoint for the brand’s innovation.

For S/S 2027, ISSEY MIYAKE presents on the official Paris calendar continuing a research-driven design tradition built on the conviction that genuine innovation in fashion comes from rethinking the fundamental relationship between cloth, technology, and the human body.
