Many designers have been feeling an unusual sense of melancholy this season in New York. Backstage, several of the week’s top talents spoke openly about seeking joy and upliftment through पहनावा, especially in a time of heightened tensions with the upcoming U.S. election and an unstable economy. Bach Mai, too, found himself in a similar mindset. “This last year has been the hardest of my life,” Mai shared before his show. “It’s more difficult than ever for young designers right now.” For his spring collection, Mai needed to break through the gloom, and he did so by infusing his signature evening gowns with a burst of bright, optimistic colors. “I wanted to focus on clawing through that darkness, there’s not a single stitch of black,” he noted, referencing an inspirational quote from Albert Camus: “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.”

Mai’s vibrant color palette for spring is certainly capable of lifting even the most downcast spirits. Drawing inspiration from artist James Turrell and Mexican architect Luis Barragán, Mai crafted an eveningwear collection that showcased shades of bold reds, oranges, pinks, and seafoam greens. “I admire Barragán’s use of color, which manages to be both bold and subtle,” he said. This cheerful mix was the fashion equivalent of an instant mood booster. The vivid hues especially stood out on Mai’s more streamlined designs, like a strapless bodice gown with a flowing tulle skirt in red, pink, and purple, and one of his strongest looks, a gauzy white sleeveless top with a dramatic back train, paired with pale-green micro shorts, a fresh, minty combination.

Mai’s gala-ready creations this season were his interpretation of American glamour (think his colorful organza “jeans”), but he also drew influences from mid-century haute couture and traditional Japanese Bijinga art. The challenge of couture, though, is achieving flawless tailoring, and some of Mai’s more intricate designs, like his plunging V-neck dresses with pleated skirts, struggled with fit issues at the bust. However, his choice of materials, luxurious failles, moirés, and satins, remained as opulent as ever. “We wanted a sense of lightness,” he explained, though at times his ambitious cuts seemed to overshadow the beautiful fabrics and colors. Certain elements, like thick bands across the waist or leather gloves, felt more decorative than essential. Despite this, Mai’s maximalist approach will likely resonate with his growing celebrity following, he recently dressed Amal Clooney for an event in Venice. As each show-stopping look appeared, it was easy to imagine them bringing joy to the red carpet at the Oscars or the Emmys.
