The garments featured in this collection display an extensive range of sustainable techniques and materials such as: innovative carded wool double fabric exclusively made with MWool® Recycled; sustainable long-hair fabric exclusively made with MWool® Recycled; padding from 100% recycled pet bottles; GRS certified Bemberg™ from C.L.A.S.S. Smart Shop; reclaiming of fully traceable ReLiveTex™ Back in the Loop high quality Italian fabrics; viscose/cotton made with responsible FSC production and eco-friendly finishing, detox Green Peace committed; upcycling of existing fabrics from leftover stock/archive; Seaqual polyester entirely recycled from plastics recovered from the sea; Newlife™ polyester 100% made in Italy, mechanically recycled from plastic bottles with traceable and transparent chain; 100% GOTS certified silk; hand-crafted knitwear in regenerated wool; eco-fur from stock archive. The “Pantone” looks are made from printing proof sheets – the so-called Atlases – generated by printers every time they need to set the color on a certain fabric, and soon after discarded. The shoes uppers, courtesy of Kallisté, are made from recycled plastic. Upcycled eyewear is a special project by Angelica Pagnelli, custom-made exclusively for Gilberto Calzolari, consisting in a brand-new restyling of vintage frames paired with high-tech, brand-new colored lenses.
In 2026, Calzolari's commitment to circular fashion and upcycled materials remains a benchmark for the industry, as Milan Fashion Week continues to spotlight designers who prioritize traceable, low-impact supply chains.
The Concept Behind "At This Stage": A Call for Cultural Reopening
The title “At This Stage” carries deliberate double meaning. On one level, it references the theatrical setting of Teatro Franco Parenti in Milan, a historic venue that served as both backdrop and symbol for the collection’s central argument. On another level, it marks a moment in time: a point in the global pandemic during which cultural institutions had been shuttered for months, leaving artists, designers, and audiences alike without the shared spaces that sustain creative life.
Gilberto Calzolari used the digital format not merely as a logistical workaround but as a platform for advocacy. The production opens with a direct statement: theaters, cinemas, museums, and places of culture had been closed for too long. By staging the film inside a functioning theater, Calzolari made the space itself a character, a quiet but insistent argument for the irreplaceable role of cultural venues in civic and artistic life.
Director Marco Proserpio, working through Art of Panic Productions, translated this vision into a film that balances the intimacy of the garments with the grandeur of the empty stage. The result is a presentation that feels less like a conventional runway film and more like a meditation on absence, presence, and the human need for collective experience.
Sustainable Innovation: A Closer Look at the Materials and Techniques
The Fall Winter 2021-22 collection represents one of the most technically detailed sustainability frameworks presented at Milan Fashion Week that season. Calzolari and his team sourced materials across multiple certified and traceable systems, demonstrating that high-fashion aesthetics and rigorous environmental standards are not mutually exclusive.
Key material highlights include:
- MWool Recycled: Used for both the innovative carded wool double fabric and the sustainable long-hair fabric, MWool is a certified recycled wool system that reduces landfill waste from textile production.
- Seaqual Polyester: Derived entirely from plastics recovered from the ocean, this material directly addresses marine pollution while maintaining performance-grade textile quality.
- Newlife Polyester: A 100% Italian-made mechanically recycled fiber produced from plastic bottles, offering a fully traceable and transparent supply chain from source to garment.
- ReLiveTex Back in the Loop Fabrics: High-quality Italian fabrics reclaimed and reintegrated into new production cycles through full traceability protocols.
- GOTS Certified Silk and FSC Viscose/Cotton: Organic and responsible fiber sourcing verified through internationally recognized third-party certification bodies.
The “Pantone” looks deserve particular attention. Constructed from printing proof sheets known as Atlases, these are sheets generated by fabric printers during color calibration and typically discarded immediately after use. Calzolari intercepted these sheets before disposal and incorporated them directly into finished garments, producing pieces that are visually striking and conceptually resonant with the collection’s zero-waste philosophy.
Gilberto Calzolari's Place in Milan's Sustainable Fashion Landscape
Calzolari has operated at the intersection of Milanese tailoring tradition and forward-looking sustainability practice since the early years of his label. His relationship with C.L.A.S.S. (Creativity Lifestyle Sustainable Synergy) and Manteco, both acknowledged in the production credits, reflects a deliberate and long-standing commitment to building a responsible supply chain rather than adopting sustainability as a seasonal trend.
By 2021, the broader Milan Fashion Week calendar had begun incorporating more digital presentations as a result of pandemic-era restrictions, but few designers used the format as purposefully as Calzolari did here. Where many digital shows simply replicated the visual grammar of a physical runway, “At This Stage” used the medium to extend the collection’s message beyond the garments themselves.
In the years since this presentation, Calzolari’s approach has continued to resonate. His emphasis on circular design, upcycled materials, and fully traceable sourcing anticipated industry conversations that would intensify significantly through 2023 and into 2026, as regulatory pressure around textile transparency increased across European markets. The Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana’s continued support of his work signals recognition of his role not simply as a niche sustainable designer but as a model for how Italian fashion can evolve without sacrificing craft or identity.
For audiences following fashion through a global lens, the “At This Stage” collection remains a concise and compelling example of what it looks like when conceptual clarity, material responsibility, and genuine artistic intent converge in a single presentation.
