Munthe

Munthe is a heritage Danish fashion house established in Copenhagen in 1994 by Creative Director Naja Munthe. Originally founded with Karen Simonsen as Munthe plus Simonsen — both graduates of Design School Kolding — the brand was created as an artistic and craft-focused alternative to the contemporary fashion industry. In 2009, Munthe became creative director, and in 2014 she bought out her partner and changed the brand’s name to simply Munthe. She has been the sole owner ever since, weathering economic ups and downs and the pandemic without any outside investment.

At the core of Munthe is the serenity embedded in every piece. From carefully selected, high-quality fabrics to intricate details in coatings and linings, each design is meticulously crafted with precision and attention to detail. For Munthe, aesthetics are holistic — ensuring that clothes are not only visually appealing on the outside but also thoughtfully constructed on the inside. The brand does most of its pattern making in-house, resulting in styles that fall equally beautifully on every body regardless of shape and age.

Sustainability has been integral from the start. Naja Munthe has been a member of Greenpeace for over 35 years, and many of the brand’s fabrics are made from recycled polyester, organic cotton, and responsibly sourced wool. The brand celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024, with Vogue Scandinavia profiling its “colourful and uncompromising” journey.

Munthe’s multidisciplinary talent extends beyond la mode to large ceramic pieces, paintings, interior design, and accessories. The brand has been a regular on the Semaine de la mode de Copenhague schedule and has been screened by CPHFW’s Sustainability Committee. For SS27, Munthe presents in show format.
