Anna Sui
Anna Sui (born August 4, 1955, Detroit, Michigan) is one of New York’s most beloved and accomplished fashion designers. She joined New York’s creative cultural underground in the 1970s, forging lasting relationships in fashion, photography, art, music, and design. Sui launched her first runway show at New York Fashion Week in 1991 — persuaded by longtime friends Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista — earning immediate international acclaim. She has presented two seasonal NYFW collections every year since, with the sole exception of Spring/Summer 2002, which was held in her Garment District studio following the September 11 attacks.
Sui’s collections take people on a creative journey, mixing vintage inspiration with current cultural obsessions. She is known for in-depth research into vintage styles, cultural arcana, art history, graphic design, and European and Asian decorative arts. The CFDA recognized Sui with its Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent in 1992 and honored her again in 2009 with the prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. She is one of the original voices of the Save the Garment Center movement. Her products are sold in over 300 stores in 30 countries, and she has also produced two seasonal Japanese collections since 1997.
