Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung (born 1974, Singapore; raised in Kathmandu, Nepal) is a Nepalese-American fashion designer based in New York City. He began his design career in New Delhi before completing his studies at Parsons School of Design in New York. After interning with Donna Karan and spending two years on the design and production team at Cynthia Rowley, he was appointed design director at Bill Blass in 2004, a role he held for five years before launching his eponymous label at NYFW in February 2009.

Gurung’s label has become known for its gowns and dresses, with fans including Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, Kate Middleton, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Anne Hathaway. His accolades include the 2010 Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award, runner-up in the 2010 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, and the 2011 CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear. He has been a CFDA member since 2011 and rose to vice-chairman of the CFDA by December 2024. He co-founded the House of Slay and released his memoir “Walk Like a Girl” in May 2025. Since 2017, he has also served as creative director for Japanese jewelry house Tasaki.
