Michael Kors (born Karl Anderson Jr., August 9, 1959, Long Island, New York) is an American fashion designer and the chief creative officer of his brand. He began his career at age five when he redesigned his mother’s wedding gown, opened his first store in his mother’s basement at age 11, and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology at 18 before dropping out to work at Manhattan boutique Lothar’s. He launched his first women’s ready-to-wear collection in 1981.

The Michael Kors Collection is the brand’s luxury line, showcasing sophisticated American sportswear and accessories at New York Fashion Week each season. Kors also served as the first creative director of women’s ready-to-wear at Céline from 1997 to 2003, revitalizing the French house with successful accessories and critically acclaimed collections. He has received the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award (1999), the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year award (2003), and the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award. The brand is now part of Capri Holdings (formerly Michael Kors Holdings). Michael Kors has been a CFDA member since the brand’s founding and is a regular NYFW opener.
