By Malene Birger

By Malene Birger is a Danish womenswear house founded in 2003 by designer Malene Birger. The brand became a hit quickly — just one year after its founding, Copenhagen Fashion Week came calling, and a couple of years later the first flagship store opened. At its peak, the label was one of Denmark’s most internationally recognized fashion exports.

Birger stepped down from the company in 2014, but the brand name remained. Since 2017, Mathilde Torp Mader served as Creative Director, having studied fashion in London with a Master’s from Central Saint Martins and worked for Kim Jones, Mulberry, Marni, and Sonia Rykiel. The design collective is now headed by Maja Dixdotter. The brand’s headquarters is situated in an 18th-century mansion in Copenhagen’s historic Frederiksberg, a 2,000-square-metre space housing the atelier, showroom, and management offices.

By Malene Birger is defined by sophisticated Scandinavian minimalism and a purposeful, elevated design ethos. Guided by integrity and designed with intention, each collection is crafted with longevity in mind — refined fabrics, feminine detailing, and enduring silhouettes that speak to a sense of luxurious utility. In 2020, the brand underwent a complete reimagining of its visual identity, introducing a signature monogram and evolving its collections and retail environments.

Sustainability has become a core pillar, with a declared focus on traceability, greener supply-chain practices, and active participation in Copenhagen Fashion Week‘s sustainability initiatives. The brand employs 51–200 people and presents four international collections annually. By Malene Birger is available through its own retail locations and a global network of department stores and boutiques. For SS27, the brand presents in show format, continuing its long-standing presence on the CPHFW schedule.
