The corset came first. A fine cotton jacquard shirt, laced and tied at the back, over white pants cut low and buttoned from midcalf to the hem. One look in, the direction was unmistakable. This was Ralph Lauren with the waist cinched and the volume up.
The show landed Sept. 9 at the Jack Shainman Gallery in downtown Manhattan, the third time the designer has taken over the space and a day before New York Fashion Week’s official calendar got underway. Ralph and Ricky Lauren took their bow before a front row that could double as a prestige-television call sheet: Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Debicki, Ariana DeBose, Eiza González, Rachel Brosnahan, Meghann Fahy, Ella Hunt, Amélie Hoeferle and Laetitia Casta.
The room had been stripped back. Past seasons brought in vintage furnishings or hand-painted green tapestries. This one leaned into the building’s bright white marble and matched it with crisp white benches. The setting said clean slate. The clothes said something else.
A New Elegance
Lauren’s own framing, in the collection notes, was that Spring 2027 offers “an irreverent take on romance that creates a new elegance,” a set of ways of dressing built around “ingenuity, character and originality.” In practice, that meant a house known for nearly 60 years of the American West and preppy sportswear reaching back through Edwardian silhouettes and Fortuny-esque gowns, then pulling those references into the present with utility pants, distressed denim and technical parachute cotton.
The palette stayed mostly white and navy. The tension came from what sat next to what. Feminine layers, frilled tops baring the midriff, a drapey gold overpainted wrap tank, shrunken floral jacquard jackets pulled from another century, all grounded by clothing built for a job site or a trail. A marabou feather-decorated denim workwear jacket. A white leather jacket with a fully smocked back. An ombré shearling vest, woven fine enough to read light. Rugged and refined, the two halves of the Ralph Lauren signature, sharing a sentence at last.
Technique as a Tell
Craft is where this house separates itself, and spring carried new methods. Backstage before the show, the raised, dimensional florals on a soft gold jacquard jacket and a strapless gown were visible up close. They were not hand-painted. They were digitally printed, a distinction that matters more than it sounds. Even the collection’s plainest idea, a T-shirt and a slip-style skirt, arrived as knit tiered ruffles edged with floral embroidery worked in resin yarn.
Eveningwear pushed the same instinct further. Lauren sent out rumpled hand-painted frocks finished with a “spritz and tumble” laundering treatment, sheer gowns embroidered with micro hand-painted sequins, draped silk lamé and body-hugging dresses cut with open backs. The house notes pointed to a wrap dress engineered with a single seam and a shimmering navy tank of micro sequins that releases into fringe over trousers. Volume came from full, swishy skirts.
The Suit and the Strategy
Then came the tailoring, and the season’s sharpest irony. Lauren included true menswear suits, cut for a woman’s body and made in an Italian men’s factory. The same day the show walked, the Council of Modedesigner of America named him an American Menswear Designer of the Year nominee for its 2026 awards. The Landebahn made the argument before the nomination confirmed it.
There is a business story underneath all of it. Ralph Lauren pushed past $8 billion in revenue in fiscal 2026, a 15% gain, after years of steering its customer base younger and less price-sensitive. A sexier spring collection is not a mood swing. It is the design side of a strategy already paying off, arriving in a season when New Yorker Modewoche is fur-free for the first time under the council’s ban and the house is staring down its 60th anniversary.
Lauren has spent six decades selling a version of America people want to live inside. Spring 2027 sells them a version they want to wear out at night. The invitation is the same one he has always extended, only issued in a lower, more assured register.
