On April 11, 2024, the renowned rapper Ja Rule and the educational nonprofit Pencils of Promise (PoP) initiated a groundbreaking educational initiative in Ghana. This collaboration marks the start of constructing a new six-classroom block at Nuaso Anglican Basic School, aiming to significantly improve learning conditions for students in the Nuaso community.

This event, named the Jeff and Aisha Atkins Groundbreaking Ceremony, celebrated the dedication of Ja Rule and his wife Aisha to enhancing educational opportunities in the Eastern region of Ghana. The local community has faced challenges with inadequate classroom facilities for primary school students. To address these issues, PoP and Ja Rule have joined forces with the local government and community members, who are contributing labor and materials to build new, safer school facilities.
The ceremony began with an opening prayer from Venerable Kofi Obeng Ofosu and was followed by a welcome speech from Mr. Samuel K. Tettey, the Municipal Education Director. Pencils of Promise CEO Kailee Scales and Ja Rule delivered inspiring speeches, with Scales discussing PoP’s impact on global education and Ja Rule sharing his commitment to the cause.
“Many children in rural parts of the world experience significant barriers to their basic human right to primary school education. PoP is so proud to partner with Ja Rule and Aisha Atkins in our shared commitment to help ensure every child has access to the safe, healthy, and engaging school experience they deserve,” stated CEO Kailee Scales.
The event was well attended by education officials, government representatives, and over 500 community members, showcasing strong local support. The program included cultural performances that added to the richness of the ceremony, reflecting the community’s heritage and enthusiasm for the project.
Ja Rule, who co-founded the L.I.F.E. organization in 2002 to provide educational and extracurricular opportunities for youth, has been a strong advocate for education. His commitment was further highlighted when he received the Audacious Award at PoP’s 15th Anniversary Gala for his impactful social contributions.
