Whole Sign Houses and House Systems

Whole sign houses assign the entire sign containing the Ascendant to house one, with the following signs assigned to houses two through twelve. The Ascendant retains its exact degree inside the first house.

In whole sign houses, boundaries fall at zero degrees of each successive sign. A planet at any degree of the Ascendant sign belongs to the first house. The Ascendant degree is not the zero-degree boundary.

This differs from equal houses, whose boundaries begin at the exact Ascendant degree, and from quadrant systems, whose divisions use angles and additional geometric rules.

Comparing systems responsibly

A planet can occupy a different house in different systems while retaining its calculated longitude. Name the house system and avoid presenting a system-dependent house label as a universal astronomical fact.

The Midheaven is a separate geometric angle; in whole sign houses it need not coincide with the tenth-house boundary.

Time and latitude limits

Whole sign assignment still needs a valid Ascendant, so it cannot supply houses for an unknown birth time. Near geographic poles, the horizon intersection can become highly sensitive.

Do not silently switch house systems or fabricate houses when geometry or inputs are invalid.
