Erdem Moralioglu drew inspiration from the enigmatic 19th-century Swiss medium Hélène Smith, blending historical and fantastical elements in a striking collection that marries the sensual with the restrained.
This season, Erdem’s collection embodied a unique duality – one that balanced prim restraint with a sense of abandon. Drawing from vastly different eras, geographies, and personalities, the collection was unified by a single muse: Hélène Smith. Known for her trance-like travels through time, Smith’s visions—ranging from the opulence of 18th-century Versailles to Martian landscapes—served as the perfect inspiration for Moralioglu.
As a muse, Smith was a stroke of brilliance. A once-celebrated figure whose psychic abilities inspired surrealist artists, she became a source of endless creativity for Moralioglu. From vivid depictions of life at the court of Marie Antoinette to her imagined Martian encounters, Smith’s world became the backdrop for an intricate blend of history, fantasy, and modernity.

More than 40 looks made their way down the runway, including corset-inspired minidresses made from antique lace remnants and hessian, all adorned with intricate crystal and floral embroidery. There were also high-collared coats and dresses featuring corset details and panniers—an emerging trend across London, spurred by the arrival of Marie Antoinette at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
In addition to these formal, sculptural pieces, Moralioglu infused the collection with languid silhouettes and rich, vibrant colors reminiscent of India, such as neon pink and electric green. Satin trenches, as fluid as dressing gowns and embellished with diamanté and floral motifs, added an element of softness and sensuality, while sari-inspired draped dresses further enriched the collection’s dreamlike quality.
Despite the current luxury crisis and cautious shopping habits, Moralioglu’s designs offered at least 40 compelling reasons for customers to return to the shop floor and embrace the alluring worlds conjured by Madame Smith.
