The 13th Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards recently brought together some of the world’s most promising designers to celebrate their brilliant new creations:

Coterie Best Handbag in Overall Style and Design: Romania’s Florina Sirman of atributcreated a handbag that features the metallic spirals of a notebook on burgundy cowhide leather as an inspiration for women to write the stories of their own lives.

The Best Retail Handbag Presented by Macy’s: US brand Brandon Blackwood New York’s Gabriella Bag is a top handle satchel that packs all the versatility and style that matters to every New Yorker. It can even transform into a hands-free backpack and available in different colors.

Bella Magazine Audience Fan Favorite: Mauritius’ Jeffrey Wan You Sew’s Le Morne Lunch Box captures memories of shared moments with friends by replicating the unique shape of Chinese take-out boxes. Its ubiquitous presence in living in the city is also a testament the pursuit of every New Yorker’s dreams.

The Harrian Best Student Made Handbag: Taiwan’s Alison Chang shows immense promise with her Pyramid Bag in cow leather and elastic featuring a triangular pouch supported by an external frame.

The Brother Best Handmade Handbag: Canada’s Adan Ballou for Adam French usedtraditional techniques to meticulously handcraft his elegant creation of deerskin leather with a front panel weave, braided edges, and lined in a blue Agave Cactus silk he bought in the souks of Marrakech.

The Pinatex Best Green Handbag: UK’s Charlotte Bingham-Wallis and Maria Costa for From Belo conceived the Leka Tote bag from repurposed seatbelts,fabric and plastic bottles.  Its stylish exterior disguises a multi pocketed interior with sections for keys, phone, even tablets. Apart from recycling materials, the brand donates to the homeless and in need in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The Cult Belt Bag Inspired by Nine West: Korea’s Yujin Kim for Valo created what she calls “Living coral bag” with a diagonal band inspired by the “N” of the Nine West logo. It’s a 2-way belt bag convertible into a shoulder bag in coral B.B.G cow leather with the gold metal buckle.

The Aimee Kestenberg “Self-Love” Inspired Handbag: Venezuela’s Mayra Martinez Spencer developed her design from her love of crystals and their healing, vibrational energy.Her bag channels the iridescent, rainbow effect inside rose quartz and paired it with a stitched, quilted heart design and a golden chain strap.

The Global Goods Partners Magazine Most Socially Responsible Handbag: US’ Brad Jeffrey’s Made By Free Women Tote is a one hundred-percent cotton canvas handmade by underprivileged women in India whose lives are changed by the opportunity of having a creative livelihood that prevents them from falling victims to slavery.
