Art – as a mirror to the zeitgeist and kindle to cultural progress – is perhaps more imperative now than ever before. And emerging talents will have a chance to showcase their contributions to the social discourse on April 28 at Sotheby’s (1334 York Avenue) for the “YoungArts New York Visual Arts, Photography + Design Exhibition” curated by YoungArts exhibition manager Luisa Munera. On show will be provocative and powerful multi-media pieces from eighteen of the National YoungArts Foundation 2017 Winners. Selected out of nationwide entries, Winners receive financial grants and professional opportunities including participation in interdisciplinary workshops, seminars and master classes such as this year’s inaugural Swarovski fashion master class – a studio tour of Shane Gabier and Chris Peters’ Creatures of the Wind fashion line – and, Georgina Chapman’s master class on her Marchesa brand.
Lending inimitable prestige to this YoungArts exhibition is premier auction house Sotheby’s New York. For decades, the rarest and most invaluable pieces of art, jewelry, antiques, and historical objects – including Pablo Picasso’s Garçon à la Pipe, Edvard Munch’s Der Schrei der Natur, and the 5,000-year- old Guennol Lioness – have been placed on auction here, its flagship of global operations, to attract collectors from all over the world. For one special evening, the works of young artists including Walker Bankson, Amanta Adams, Jesse Hudson, and Alexandra Crampton will hang at its galleries, designed by architect Richard Gluckman and equipped with a cutting edge lighting system that more accurately manifests color and surface nuances and subtleties.
Also on the YoungArts New York 2017 schedule are “Voice, Theater Dance + Jazz Performance” (April 29, directed by Michael McElroy and Adam Larson) and “Classical Music Performance and Writers’ Readings” (April 30, directed by Elizabeth Joy Roe and Joan Morgan) both at the Baryshnikov Arts Center (450 West 37th Street). Modeled after its signature program, National YoungArts Week, the series of regional programs are also presented in Los Angeles and Miami. Support for YoungArts programs is provided by national premier sponsor, Carnival Foundation; regional sponsor, Northern Trust; YoungArts legacy master series sponsor, Aon; YoungArts design arts discipline sponsor, Arquitectonica; and YoungArts visual arts discipline sponsor, Related Group.
