Scott Van Rixel of Boh Boa Inc. Changing The Spice Industry

Scott Van Rixel of Boh Boa Inc. Changing The Spice Industry

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Scott Van Rixel of Boh Boa, Inc

Boba Vida

Can you share with us your background and your career?

I was very blessed to grow up in Milwaukee.  Even though it can feel like a small town, it is packed with great restaurants and great “old school” chefs.  Sadly many of those have passed, but they left a wake of great new chefs that picked up where they left off. My culinary career has given me great opportunities to experience the world.   From becoming the chef for the Kennedy Family to cooking with my wife and daughter, food has brought me great challenges, great experiences and much joy.

Can you share with our readers how you started your work in culinary? What inspired you to become a creator in the food market?

Food is my world. The greatest joy I have always found is creativity in cooking, and coupled with being a bit of a science nerd, I was able to create some cool food products. Our pearls are definitely the culmination of the joy of food creativity along with the intellectual joy of the science I find so fulfilling.

What inspired you to create Boh Boa, Inc.? What’s in the near future for this new product line?

Obviously, we didn’t invent the concept of boba.  However,  our expertise in taking the basic sweet profile flavors traditionally done with popping boba and move into true and creative culinary expertise is where we truly shine. Our pearls are an awesome way to add pops of flavor to any dish.  From our Sphera Pearls, and Boba Vida, to our Balls of Fire to our Bouquet terpene line, we bring our A-game across the wide world of flavors.  With the great team we have in place,  I’m excited for the ability to take simple flavors and present them in a way that makes them new, fresh and exciting again.

During the pandemic many people lost their jobs and livelihood, how did your company adapt and pivot during this time to be what it is today? How do you navigate a successful launch?

We were also blessed in that we were able to take much of the “pandemic time” and put it to good use, applying our time to R&D, facility design and construction.  However, our launch did get impacted from Covid like almost everyone.  Our construction was delayed due to lack of material supplies.  This pushed our launch a little too far into the fourth quarter to really be able to take advantage of the holiday season, but we are off to a great start in the new year and are exciting for the opportunities that are ahead.

If you could go back and talk to your younger self what would you tell him and why?

For me, dwelling on the past only serves to hinder the future.   Having said that,  I would like to go back and tell myself to be kinder.   I believe I have always been patient and passionate about teaching those about the craft that has brought me so much joy and great experiences.  What I can also say is that I haven’t always been patient or kind with those outside of that circle.  That is certainly something I wish I could encourage my younger self to embrace.

Are you working on any exciting new projects now for Sphera?

The whole experience of building a new company and bringing new flavors to a technology reimagined is what I find most exciting and am confident the market place will find it equally exciting.

Where do you see yourself, the brand and your career going in this new year and in the future?

I know we have a great concept and a great team and that is an important place to start. After that, seeing how the market reacts to new product lines and making any necessary changes will ultimately decide our level of success.   I believe that the best thing I can do as our leader to ensure success,  is to be the person I would encourage my younger self to be and that putting kindness out into the world will come back in spades.

Where can people purchase Sphera Pearls?
