Our first event was an industry session with David where he shared a lot of information and answered many questions to every day challenges that industry member’s face in the wedding event business. David shared his beginnings in the industry and how he was able to learn from early mistakes, overcome them and build one of the biggest brands in the event planning world.
He shared key points in growing a successful event business and created an atmosphere of sharing that allowed for everyone participating to learn and build on from his growing pains. It was an inspirational session with everyone immersed in the conversation. David truly captured the audience with his sparkling personality as he eloquently shared his advice and personal experiences over the past 30 years and how they too can build their brand.
After the industry session we had a one on one interview with David, where he shared a few more insights as to who he is and how he built the David Tutera Brand.
Which aspect of your job do you like the most?
I love, love, love doing television, being on camera and being able to provide moments of celebration for people to enjoy watching.
I also love the brand designing dresses, jewelry, all aspects of the brand. That part of the business allows people who market my business to touch the consumer that doesn’t have a lot of money to spend. I design for a reachable market, something the average person can attain without the exorbitant price tag.
I love to hear voices of people that are going and saying “oh my God I can afford something”. It’s very gratifying for me that I can help provide that.
The bridge for fashion doesn’t exist for bridal, so for me it’s a great marker to be in. It keeps growing, I’m thankful to be in the position that I am in. I design Inspirational, aspirational and affordable. That’s what my viewers know me from.
I spend my whole career in the event business working for people that have so much money. They taught me, how to do what I do. The reality is that they taught me and at the same time they paid me. I learned a lot and now I get to do what I want to do. I can create for my fans for people to be able to afford something amazing without breaking their wallets.
Did you find that it was hard to crossover to bridal fashion?
No, not as hard as it could have possibly been. I think being on television helped me. My viewers know me, they trust me, and they allow me to bring their visions to life.
What inspires you now?
It may sound expected but the Fans really inspire me, that missing hole that needs to be filled. I just did a line for fashion or custom jewelry. I was looking at what was missing. Everything is always clear, so traditional no colors. My biggest demographic is Black and Latin women. I love their over the top personalities, they remind me of me. They want sparkle, color. I get inspired from my fans.
What is something crazy that yours fans don’t know about you?
That I’m a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy. I am very relaxed and super normal. I don’t go to expensive flashy places, I am incredibly casual. It surprises people to learn that about me.
What keeps you going doing what you do?
Passion. My family, my daughter who is turning 3 soon. I’m of the belief that where you are today can be taken away tomorrow. I am passionate about what I do. I always look at how I’m going to make it work tomorrow, how I can make it better. That is the way I was raised.
How is Cielo, how does she inspire you?
My daughter she inspires me every day in everything I do. She is incredibly artistic, and incredibly entertaining. I usually lay out two outfits at night for school the next morning, and she changes little things and makes her choice. She is pretty amazing and loves to see what’s happening behind everything. I keep telling her you can take over daddy’s business. She loves fashion.
After our one on one interview with David, we had the chance to see the vendors, taste some of the great foods and sweets, then enjoy a Bridal and Tuxedo Fashion Show. Here is some of our experience:
Thank you to David Tutera, Rosa Fasolo and Eda Kalkay for making “Our Wedding Experience” a very special one…
