Living Room Layout Mistakes to Avoid
Decorating a home is easier said than done, and you don’t have to be an interior designer to know it. From surfing Pinterest for hours to searching for amazing pieces of furniture that won’t bankrupt you, the struggle is real.
The most challenging part of it all is trying to layout the living room. Everyone wants it to be functional, comfortable, and eye-catching, but where do you start? There is a lot of subjectivity in design, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
However, there are some living room layout mistakes to avoid that are universal.
The Furniture Matches
Symmetry in a living room is boring, so don’t buy matching furniture. The matching sofa and loveseat combo is outdated. Instead, get individual pieces of furniture that complement each other in some way. Use a pair of chairs with a sofa or add throw pillows that are a different color than the furniture.
It’s Too Symmetrical
A tidy, orderly home is wonderful, and you probably work hard to keep it that way. However, there is such a thing as too much order. Many decorators fall into the trap of oversimplifying things, usually by maintaining the same shape and color throughout the room—and it’s boring.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match and add some eclectic design choices. Incorporate some different colors and patterns to create some real character.
Everything Is the Wrong Size
In most homes, the furniture is either too big or too small for the living room. You don’t want it to look like a scene from Alice in Wonderland with massive couches and overstuffed chairs in a small apartment. Before buying any furniture, measure the room and measure the piece. Make sure it complements the room and people are able to move around easily.
Don’t Hug the Walls
A natural instinct when decorating is to push all the furniture up against the wall. This makes everyone feel like the room is bigger than it is, and that may be. However, the reality is that doing this is boring, and it makes the room look out of proportion. Go ahead and center the furniture and float it off the wall so people can pass on both sides of it.
Television Isn’t Everything
The biggest living room layout mistake to avoid is making the TV the eye of the storm. The entire room doesn’t have to center around the TV. Binging all night is awesome, but there are other ways to set up the living room. Arrange your sofas and chairs to promote interaction and conversation. The TV can be set off to the side or adjacent to the furniture while still visible.
