Jennifer Lopez Honored at 2023 ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards
Jennifer Lopez was honored with the “Icon Award” at the 2023 ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles. The ceremony took place at NYA Studios in Hollywood on Tuesday, December 5, 2023. Donna Langley, Chairperson of Universal Pictures, presented the award, and Lopez delivered an inspiring and heartfelt speech.
In her acceptance speech for the “Icon Award,” Jennifer Lopez spoke about the importance of breaking stereotypes and celebrating the versatility and strength of women in Hollywood. She emphasized, “The idea was that you were not as real a musician if you were also an actress, or you’re not a serious actor if you’re a dancer, or a legitimate businessperson, or entrepreneur if you are an artist.” Lopez passionately advocated for embracing the multifaceted nature of women and their ability to excel in various roles, remarking, “The actual magic of being a woman is to be able to do many different things, and do them spectacularly.”
Addressing common criticisms faced by women, Lopez shared that traits such as changing one’s mind, being emotional, and having attention in multiple places at once are, in fact, superpowers that define the essence of being a woman. She expressed, “That the things that women are usually criticized for and kept out of the rooms of power because of…is our superpower and the essence of who we are. That is what it is to be a woman.”
Closing her powerful speech, Lopez echoed the sentiment, “Why can’t we do all the things?!” and declared, “I will always believe that we can, that all of you can, that I can.”
Jennifer Lopez is featured on the cover of ELLE’s 2023 Women in Hollywood issue, the magazine’s annual celebration of the women they loved watching this year.
