Interview With The Queen of Theme Bugsy Drake
Recently I had the pleasure of sitting down with Bugsy Drake, star of Bravo hit Below Deck Mediterranean. Known for her outrageously lavish tablescapes, Drake is “The Queen of Theme” … And in her upcoming book, “The Art of Tablescaping“, she’s serving up all her secrets for hosting unforgettably enchanting events.
Honed over her decade working on the world’s most exclusive superyachts and private islands, Drake dishes out decor tips– as well as step-by-step guides for creating your own world-class “dining adventures” in the new book that she just launched last month.
Can you share with us your background and your career?
Yes, so I grew up near the ocean, in a small coastal town called Ballito in Durban, South Africa. I always had passion and an affinity with anything to do with being out on the water. When I completed my Honors Degree in Film and Media at AFDA, in Cape Town, I decided to give yachting a go for a season to make some extra money to travel, before settling down into the working world. I fell in love with the job of being a stewardess almost immediately and decided to commit to it for a longer period of time.
In 2016 the world of yachting and film collided when I was cast on Bravo TVs Below Deck Mediterranean, and I have since done two seasons of the show (filmed in Croatia and Spain, respectively). That is where I discovered, and really got to experiment with, my passion for tablescaping and event management— all of which has led me on the path to writing and releasing my first book, The Art of Tablescaping, which is out now.
Can you share with our readers how you started your company and the mission behind it?
At the moment my company in all of its entirety is still in the works—but my brand, Bugsy Drake, which is based off my name, came to life after appearing on Below Deck Mediterranean and being recognized for the thing I love the most: brining a dining experience to life by artfully decorating and setting tables. Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, I will really be growing my brand into a full fledge company in a number of different ways— but the mission behind it is to inspire others to find what they love, and then to pursue it with absolute kindness.
If you could go back and talk to your younger self what you tell her and why?
So I would tell her to never stop imagining, creating and having fun…And to always believe wholeheartedly in the beauty of her dreams no matter how big or out of reach they might seem. I would tell her to always remain humble and kind and to drown out any negative comments thrown her way…And above all, to press on with a sparkle in her eye and a bounce in her step. People in this world will be quick to dampen the spark to your flame— and it is up to you to keep it alive and burning in order to reach your full potential.
Are you working on any exciting new projects now?
I am so excited about the fact that I have just published and am currently promoting my first book, The Art of Tablescaping which I am just over the moon about! It has truly been a passion project of mine come to life, and it is something I am so proud to share with the world!
Where do you see yourself and your career going in this new year and in the future?
I am focusing a lot on my book at the moment, and hoping to create a fun culture of entertaining at home and really going all out to create an adventure for your guests. There are a couple of ideas and plans currently in the works as well—but eventually, and ideally, I would really love to have my own events company one day or maybe even my own TV show! That would be awesome!
How can our readers connect with you on Social Media?
