Interview With Rekha Barar of Blossom Box
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Rekha Barar of Blossom Box.
She is founder and CEO of Blossom Box Jewelry, the international brand dedicated to enabling women to express their individuality through high-quality jewelry. Inspired by childhood trips to India, Rekha aims to capture the vibrancy of native colors and textures to breathe new life into everyday fashion.
As a small biz entrepreneur with a background in accounting, Rekha has been doing very well during COVID and has seen a significant surge in sales and online engagement. Despite the current pandemic, Blossom Box is on the rise due to dynamic integrated marketing strategies, enhanced communication efforts, and increased customer engagement, all while building brand awareness. Founder, Rekha Barar is a strong believer in empowering women to succeed and donating to India to support a better future.
Can you share with us your background and the background behind Blossom Box?
I am a proud first-generation, Indian Canadian. As a child, I always knew that I was different from those growing up in my rural British Columbian town. When I was six years old while visiting India, my eyes were opened to my native culture in a new way through the colors and textures of an Indian marketplace. India’s unique dance, music, architecture, food, and customs differs from any other country. I did not know it at the time, but the vibrancy of my homeland would later spark my innovative and creative passion to make a difference in the world through fashion.
Watching Indian women weaving, constructing and working with their hands in order to make a living was completely fascinating to me. At a very young age, I began to study the bazaars and the jewels of the Mogul Era and how innovation and creativity could change lives.
I learned that by thinking outside of the box, profound blossoming took place. My immigrant parents were both business owners. Blossom Box is a combination of my love for jewelry, and long desire to be an entrepreneur.
Keeping love at the heart of Blossom Box, I created the line to pay homage to my Indian culture, by crafting gorgeous jewelry to empower women to be great. Blossom Box captures vibrant cultural opulence. Currently, I have an entire line dedicated to my love for India, “Love India by Blossom Box,” which celebrates the country and pays homage to its beauty. Recently, we celebrated Vice President Kamala Harris for our President’s Day Sale, acknowledging her Indian culture and impact on all women.
When I think of innovation, I think of drawing outside the lines, and following paths less traveled. Innovation is new, fresh and it breaks through the clutter. Blossom Box is all about blossoming into what’s next in fashion. We are more than jewelry, we are an undeniable statement – showcasing the uniqueness and individuality of women. Empowering women is what we are passionate about. Blossoming women, stand out from the crowd with confidence and individuality. We empower women by giving them the tools to courageously standout.
I experienced a true aha moment attending my first trade show. Trade shows are a true investment for small businesses and I clearly remember questioning this financial decision. However, on the second day of the trade show, Blossom Box caught the attention of a major buyer and then after obtaining an initial department store account our line was picked up by Neiman Marcus, Saks, Nordstrom and Anthropologie. This solidified me leaving my traditional 9-5 role in accounting to pursue my lifelong dream of owning my own business.
I have dreams of owning my own workshop, giving women the opportunity to rise. I strive to build a lifestyle brand that embraces uniqueness and confidence.
What is the brand’s vision behind Blossom Box?
Blossom Box is bold, daring and differentiates itself in comparison to the current jewelry marketplace because every piece is handcrafted by the finest artisans in India and made from the highest quality materials. Perfection is our goal, while connecting with people to help them embrace their own differences.
We always keep women in mind. Our craftspeople in India are all women and all New York employees are also women. My goal was to always empower women, through jewelry and moreover, through the brand as a whole.
What do you think makes the Blossom Box Brand stand out? Can you share a story?
Our design process is authentically original and differentiates itself as every piece is handcrafted by the finest artisans in India and made from the highest quality materials. Women are the heart of our brand and our daring and bold themes are evident in all that we produce.
We keep all women in mind during the design process which has led us to attract diverse consumers who are truly reflective of the world we live in. Blossom Box is steadfast in creating products that naturally empower women through fashion. Every Blossom Box piece provides a luxury appeal and is designed for women who love to adorn themselves on special occasions. Blossom Box is for women who want to stand out from the crowd. Our line evokes confidence, while encouraging women to express their own uniqueness.
Blossom Box is more than a jewelry line; it’s a statement of the kind of woman you want to be. It’s knowing who you are and what you want. Is the brand working on any exciting new projects now?
Understanding the impact that fashion has, Blossom Box is committed to changing the narrative of jewelry to be uniquely inclusive. This new innovative method has provided business solutions in new untapped markets. Our classic Boho-chic aesthetics are in Free People, as well as BHLDN stores, which specializes in chic wedding apparel. It is an honor that our designs and accessories are seen and respected for the elegance they deliver, especially empowering women on one of their most special days, their wedding day.
Additionally, Blossom Box is working on a sister brand, something more everyday wear…but more on that soon!
Where do you see the Blossom Box brand going in the future?
