Can you share with us your background and your career?
I grew up in Galveston, TX where I graduated from Ball High School. I received my bachelor’s from Texas State University and am currently pursuing my master’s at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA. I knew I wanted to work in entertainment at a young age, so after college I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams. I have been working in the entertainment industry for over 15 years in many different capacities. I have had the pleasure of gracing the stage and screen with some of the greatest artists and actors in the world. In addition to performing, I am a writer and have recently released my first book titled, The Game of Life.
Can you share with our readers how you started your company and the mission behind it?
I learned early on to take the business of “me” seriously. As an entertainer, I am my brand. Once my career started blossoming I stepped out on faith and D.O.P. Entertainment was born. I wanted to present a platform that celebrated being Different On Purpose (D.O.P.). The mission has always been to stand out (not fit in) on purpose. My company’s goal is to make content that educates, inspires and uplifts our community and the world.
If you could go back and talk to your younger self what you tell her and why?
I would tell myself to dream even bigger because the sky’s the limit and that fear of failure is not an option. I now know to treat every mistake as a learning opportunity and to keep it pushing. We miss 100 percent of the shots we don’t take. Take them all.
Are you working on any exciting new projects now?
I am always working on exciting new projects, but the thing about show business is that we can’t tell what projects we’re in until it’s showtime. I am, however, very excited about my book which is a project that took several years to come to fruition. It’s now being distributed and is available worldwide. I plan to continue to promote the book with interviews and speaking engagements to encourage people to stay hopeful in difficult seasons. I also have a few projects in the works through my production company D.O.P. Entertainment, so look out for that. In the meantime, you can catch me on Coming 2 America on Amazon and on Genius: Aretha on Hulu.
Where do you see yourself and your career going in this new year and in the future?
The future’s looking bright. I am now a best-selling author and will continue to write books that encourage people. One thing the pandemic taught me is to cherish each day that the Lord graciously bestows upon us. As for what I see for myself, I have more books to write, I have more stories to tell, characters to portray, projects to direct, and most importantly, I have more lives to encourage and inspire, especially women. My passion for inspiring women to live to their fullest potential will continue to be a driving force in my future endeavors.
