How to Clean and Maintain Your Curtains

Most rooms, in most homes, have curtains of some kind or another. Despite how common they are in our daily lives, people frequently forget that they need cleaning, just like any other fabric. While we might not wear curtains out and about, we still often touch them when we open or close them, and they can accumulate dust and other household dirt. With that in mind, we thought it was about time to look into how to clean and maintain your window coverings, to keep them looking fresh and clean.
Dust and hoover them regularly
As with anything, it’s best to regularly clean your curtains, to avoid any big build-ups of grime. Try to dust them once a week or so – more if you keep the window open and lots of dust comes in, less if they’re in a room that’s not used so regularly. You can also hoover them, if the fabric isn’t too delicate, to get even more of the dust out of them.
Wash or dry clean
Even with regular dusting, eventually, you’ll need to wash your sheets. If they’re made from a more durable fabric, such as cotton or polyester, you can probably machine wash them yourself, making sure that you hang dry them.
If they’re made from more delicate materials, however, it might be best to get them professionally dry cleaned, to ensure that you’re not inadvertently damaging your expensive curtains. Doing this at reasonable intervals will likely be key to keeping your curtains looking fresh and clean.
Replacing old hooks
Even if you keep the fabric looking fresh and clean, it’s inevitable that over time, some of your curtain fixtures might start to break. There’s nothing worse than a curtain that’s left hanging by just a couple of hooks, and it’s also no fun trying to drag them open and closed. Keep a few spares handy, in a drawer somewhere, and when you see one that’s broken, replace it straight away. It only takes a minute or two, and can make a significant difference to how easy your curtains are to use.

Out with the old, in with the new
Eventually, you won’t be able to keep your curtains looking nice anymore just by cleaning them. When they start to look a little tattered, or those stains just won’t come out, it might be time to consider getting rid of your old window coverings and buying a new set from an online specialist such as Woodyatt Curtains. You can freshen up your home while doing so, adding a new touch of color and a nice new pattern to the space.
Clearly, there’s a lot that you can do to keep your curtains looking their best. From regular maintenance such as dusting and hook replacement, to dry cleaning, you need to put a little effort in to keep your home in tip-top condition. Curtains don’t last forever though, and at some point, you’ll likely have to say goodbye to your old ones and welcome some new window coverings into your life.
