“Houda El Fechka Eddiouane” Being True To Herself During Couture Fashion Week.
February in New York City means designers from around the world are showcasing their Fall collections during “New York Fashion Week” and Houda El Fechka Eddiouane wasn’t the exception. She presented her collection entitled “Timeless” during “Couture Fashion Week”. Couture Fashion Week presents a series of couture and luxury fashion shows in New York City from designers around the world.

Houda El Fechka Eddiouane presented a total of 18 looks made of different shimmery and heavy fabrics including brocade, satin, and embellished fabrics. For this collection, she tried to give a general idea of her identity which is a mix between her Moroccan roots and her Dutch upbringing. What is different about this designer is that she doesn’t try to adhere her designs and aesthetic to the Western minimalistic style that seems to be so popular nowadays. Houda El Fechka Eddiouane brought in each piece a representation of her roots to the “Couture Fashion Week” runway. Her best looks were a beautiful sky blue and white long robe made of sequins, a purple and green gown with a colorful paisley pattern fabric on the sides, and her grey gown with a black robe made of a light fabric and decorated with a silver and black belt.

At the beginning, it was hard to see her collection as something more than ethnic or costume design. It could have been the hair or the makeup used, but then I realized that these assumptions were wrong and a big mistake that some of us are making and fomenting in the fashion industry. Some of us are not used to Houda’s style and there is nothing wrong about it; it is actually a good thing because she is overcoming some barriers of the fashion industry by showing how proud she is of her identity during a time in the United States when being different could be dangerous and this is eye-opening.

Designers should stop pushing and changing their style to the “popular aesthetic”, instead they need to remind people there are different cultures and it is important to recognize and learn about them and this is something that Houda El Fechka Eddiouane is trying to do with her “Timeless” collection.
