Hakan Akkaya’s SS18 Collection
New York Fashion Week Runway Show
Hakan Akkaya says his latest collection was inspired by existentialism and the notion of determining individual destiny with free will. More to the point though is how the designer himself utilized the concept to express his own creative freedom in conjuring up these dynamic pieces. Aesthetically, the collection appears like this millennium’s new “new romantics”. Even show hairstylist Shuhari knew well enough to render new wave hairstyles on some of the models.
When glam rock transitioned into the new romantic movement in the early 1980s, its proponents adopted the flamboyance of the original romantics. But the leading music artists of the era hijacked the movement entirely and steered it into groundbreaking fashion directions with razor sharp silhouettes and androgynous possibilities. And here we are with the Turkish designer’s brilliantly imaginative and progressive explorations of proportion and defiance of gender conformity in clothing.
Shirts, pants, jackets, suits, and dresses are rendered in the brand’s signature black and white palette, with bold stripes, hard edges, and sophisticated bands and buckle details. Mr. Akkaya first showed here five years ago and has consistently delivered intriguing collections with a definitive sensibility while continuously moving toward an exciting new future.
