Munich, October 29, 2020: Six impressive award winners, five great presenters, one audience award, ten locations, seven cities, four countries and the motto “We are one”: This is the GQ Men of the Year Awards 2020. GQ meets today’s new normality with a completely new, unprecedented approach to entertainment, that brings the Hollywood glam to the screen. It honors top national and international personalities – without a physical event, but with iconic video moments and celebrates this year’s “Men of the Year” in highly exciting, relevant, political and personal video statements by the award winners.

An overview of the award winners, presenters and highlights of the speeches:

  • Sportsman of the Year: Leon Goretzka (Presented by: Marc-André ter Stegen)

Leon Goretzka: “In these difficult times, I feel it is a great privilege and responsibility to give something back. During these months we all show responsibility by wearing a mask, protecting not only ourselves but also others from Corona. But our responsibility does not end when we take the mask off. We also have to take responsibility for issues like racism, sexism, integration and inclusion. As citizens in Germany and as Germans in the world. We can take our future into our own hands not only on the pitch, but also on the street and on the internet.”

  • Movie International: Zachary Quinto (Presented by: Jim Parsons)

Zachary Quinto: “When I was young and just starting to study acting, I was incredibly lucky to be taught by my great acting teacher. She shaped my understanding of what it means to be an artist: How you move in the world is at least as important as on stage. I have never forgotten this fundamental lesson. Finding this balance has always been a cornerstone of my consciousness and my ambition to fight for people who have been less fortunate than me.”

  • Woman of the Year: Claudia Schiffer (Presented by: André Pollmann, Chief Creative Director GQ)

Claudia Schiffer: “Over the past 50 years, I have often been asked whether there is such a thing as the secret of my success. And quite honestly: Yes. But it’s quite simple: I have the great luck to sincerely love what I do. And I have worked hard all my life, been professional and have always trusted my instincts. In the 80s I fell in love with fashion, and in the 90s I learned what fashion really is. Myself and the other supermodels, we lived and breathed fashion. The industry was extremely fast moving and demanding, and I am really proud that we were still able to keep control of our careers at all times.”

  • Voice of the Year: Kimberly Jones (Presented by: Linda Zervakis)

Kimberly Jones: “I stand for the marginalized people, the least of them, the voices that go unheard. We are moving in a time and a space where the least of them, the voiceless, arefinally getting a voice and I am grateful and honored to be that voice for them.”

  • Legend: Jean Paul Gaultier (Presented by: Tobias Frericks, Fashion Director GQ)

Jean Paul Gaultier: “The pandemic is a good time to reflect; to think about what is happening, what we want to do, how we can change things and make the world an even better place”.

The actor Jannis Niewöhner received the GQ Men of the Year Award in the category “Man of next Year”. This is the first audience award that GQ has presented in 21 years and is the first time GQ has honored people whose greatest achievements lie in the future.
