The Filipino Americans for Biden Harris [FAFBH] and Make Us Count Celebrity PSA Campaign

Now that Election Night 2020 is over [for now], we would like to take a look back and highlight one of the exceptional PSA campaigns that made an impact this past election season. The Filipino Americans for Biden Harris [FAFBH] and Make Us Count Celebrity PSA campaign instantly grabbed our attention because we have never seen such a necessary and targeted campaign before.

Their talent outreach letter read: There are 4.1 million Filipino Americans in the US and during the last presidential election, only 59% were registered to vote and of that, only 50% actually voted. That leaves about 2.8 million American Filipino voters untapped. Analyzing the numbers of the Presidential Election, that could be the margin of victory.

Many American Filipinos have a special gift of universal and multicultural appeal. There are several Fil-Am celebs in the entertainment world, most of whom are mixed, that many people do not know are Fil-Am. Celebrity Talent such as Vanessa Hudgens, Dave Bautista, Apl de Ap from The Black Eyed Peas, Darren Criss, Nicole Scherzinger, Kirk Hammett from Metallica, Hailee Steinfeld, Saweetie, Coach Erik Spoelstra from the Miami Heat, Supermodel Kelsey Merritt, Kehlani, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bassist Joey Santiago from The Pixies, Enrique Iglesias, Bruno Mars, Chad Hugo from The Neptunes, and Shay Mitchell, all claim Filipino heritage. We spoke to FAFBH FL State Director, Founder of UP! | Unparalleled Productions and EP | Arnel San Pedro, about how the idea for these PSAs evolved. “I wanted to highlight the diversity that exists within our shared culture. When you take a look at the images of the celebrity talent outreach list, collectively they represent a cross hybrid of all cultures and most could check off more than one box.”

Filipino Americans for Biden Harris

The PSA creative concept was that each celebrity talent was given a selection of social media memes, asked to choose 3, and speak about their importance in relation to the election. San Pedro’s team produced FAFBH and Make Us Count [non-partisan] PSAs which played on social media outlets all throughout the later half of October and into Election Night.

The FAFBH PSAs featured Celebrity and Influencer Talent such as: Hollywood starlet Tia Carrere from Wayne’s World, Total Recall, & AJ & the Queen, Josh Dela Cruz, host of Nick Jr.’s Blue’s Clues & You!, a capella boy group The Filharmonic from The Sing-Off, The Late Late Show with James Corden, & Pitch Perfect 2, social media influencer Slay Rizz, and Alex Ritchie from Recording Academy’s Grammys(R) Next. The Make Us Count campaign also featured legendary turntablist DJ QBert from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz and Pro Wrestler TJ Perkins.

The memes addressed important community topics such as: the cultural confusion that comes along with the Filipino identity, Covid-19 Poem About America, Queer People, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice, Healthcare Workers, Joe Biden’s quote on the contributions of Fil-Ams, and Truthful Speaking.

In the Mexican or Asian video, DJ QBert said, “We have so much diversity in our spirits. That’s why we make so much crazy art for the world. It’s a beautiful thing!”
Joe Biden’s meme read, “Whether fighting in our armed forces or fighting to advance social justice, Filipino Americans have enriched and strengthened every aspect of our country.”
The San Pedro team’s PSAs clearly demonstrate how American Filipinos use “crazy art” “to advance social justice” in the USA and for that, we salute you.
