ANCHORS AWEIGH! A VOYAGE ON CHRIS-CRAFT BOATS
Chris-Craft Boats: An American Classic ($65.00 Rizzoli New York) the new book from Nick Voulgaris III, sets sail into Summer across several cities after its launch where a gorgeous Capri 21 christened the Ralph Lauren Home Edition was showcased in front of Rizzoli on Broadway. The boat, immediately recognizable for its vertical bow, stainless steel bow plate, and sloped tumblehome, was custom outfitted by Ralph Lauren Home with paint color, wood trim and fabric and joins the book on a jaunt through Nantucket, Sag Harbor, Newport, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and others. At the event, Rizzoli publisher Charles Miers and Chris-Craft president and CEO Stephen Heese welcomed guests to an exclusive preview and signing by the author.
Long a coveted symbol of the finest in sea worthy vessels, Chris-Craft was established in 1874 and has since stood for “heritage and a timeless spirit” as extolled by Mr. Lauren in the book’s foreword. Mr. Voulgaris has spent the last couple of years plowing through the boat manufacturer’s history and unfolds its tale in over two hundred pages with new and previously unpublished archival photographs for a definitive “biography” of the brand. The expansive scope of the company and recounting the tradition of American boat building proved a formidable challenge while appealing to the author’s own interests, having already owned and restored several boats including two vintage Chris-Crafts.
Everyone familiar with Mr. Voulgaris already knows how his projects involve nothing less than his most cherished passions including the once languishing but now converted into a fully functioning property he calls Kerber’s Farm, along with two other books for Rizzoli – Hinckley Yachts and The Seaside House. And in each of these, there is a consistent attempt by Mr. Voulagaris to not only recapture a slice of the past but present a powerfully persuasive assertion on the continued relevance and indeed modernity of these subjects – from growing local foods to the allure of life along the shorelines. But just as evident, there is simply no denying that along the way, he evokes more than a little bit of romance in the notion of an eternal summer. And with his latest book, it is the most tempting invitation yet to sail off into the sunset.
