16th Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe Kicks Off at Imola with Full Grid

This season marks a historic milestone for Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe as it aligns for the first time with the FIA World Endurance Championship, launching the 16th season of the exclusive Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 series at the renowned Imola circuit. Positioned just over an hour from Automobili Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, this event not only signifies the series’ third appearance at Imola, following races in 2017 and 2022, but also carries added importance with the European competition debut of the SC63.

The starting lineup is expected to be bustling with activity, featuring more than 50 entries, including eight teams making their Super Trofeo debut—Schumacher CLRT, Aggressive Team Italia, GG Magic Motorsport, GM Motorsport, DS Racing, ASR, UNIQ Racing, and Pegasus Racing. Additionally, over 30 drivers will experience their first Super Trofeo race at Imola. To date, the series has hosted 195 races, with the milestone 200th race anticipated during the third round at the upcoming Le Mans 24 Hours weekend.

Elite Racers and New Talents Clash in Lamborghini Super Trofeo Pro Class Showdown

Leading the Pro class entries are last season’s championship runners-up from VS Racing, Mattia Michelotto and Gilles Stadsbader. The Italo-Belgian duo clinched five victories last season, narrowly missing the championship title to Brendon Leitch of Leipert Motorsport in the final round. They are poised to encounter formidable challengers this season, including the German pair Sebastian Balthasar – returning to Leipert Motorsport after a stint in 2021 – and Jacob Riegel. Also in the mix is the seasoned race winner Amaury Bonduel of BDR Competition with GrupoProm, competing solo. DL Racing presents a promising young team with Riccardo Ianniello and Rodrigo Testa de Sousa, who both showed strong performances late in the 2023 season, with Testa de Sousa earning his first win in Vallelunga.

Adding a Nordic touch to the lineup, Target Racing’s Largim Ali (Denmark) and Oliver Söderström (Sweden) return, hoping to capitalize on their initial win last November in Vallelunga. The grid also welcomes Hampus Ericsson, brother of Indy 500 champion and former F1 driver Marcus, making his Super Trofeo debut solo in the #31 car, alongside fellow Swede Calle Bergman and debutant Guido Luchetti in car #10. Iron Lynx is expanding its presence with four Pro teams, featuring Bulgarians Pavel Lefterov and Stefan Bostandjiev in car #41, rookies Jesse Salmenautio and Giorgio Amati in #42, and Edgar Maloigne partnered with Georgi Dimitrov in #43. The Oregon Team is fielding two youthful Pro pairings: Paul Levet with László Tóth and Leonardo Caligioni with Enzo Geraci in cars #34 and #61, respectively. After a close contest for the Am title in his inaugural car racing season last year, Egyptian racer Ibrahim Badawy steps up to the Pro category in 2024, continuing with DL Racing.

Pro-Am and Am classes set to thrill again in 2024

Although the Pro-Am class sees fewer entries this year, the competition in 2024 remains fierce. Defending class champion Andrzej Lewandowski, a holder of five Super Trofeo titles, will embark on his first full season alongside his son Adrian under the ASR banner. They are set to face strong competition from Boutsen VDS’ duo Roee Meyuhas and Renaud Kuppens, who joined forces during the Vallelunga season finale in 2023. Additionally, Iron Lynx is expected to challenge strongly with the seasoned Claude-Yves Gosselin and young Joran Leneutre teaming up for an all-French lineup, while Pietro Perolini and Davide Roda represent Oregon Team.

Meanwhile, the Am category promises another year of tightly contested races. Last year’s North America Am champions, Anthony McIntosh and Glenn McGee, are taking on the European circuit with Leipert Motorsport, following their debut at the end of 2023. They will continue to compete in the North American championship as well. VS Racing is poised to be a top contender once more with the returning Piergiacomo Randazzo and seasoned Stéphane Tribaudini, alongside notable solo competitors like Holger Harmsen of GT3 Poland and Stéphan Guerin of Schumacher CLRT. Newcomers Cyril Saleilles and Julien Lambert will make their Super Trofeo debut for Rexal Villorba Corse, joined by Stefano Pezzucchi who teams up with Diego Locanto at DL Racing.

Privitelios aim for back-to-back LB Cup titles

Reigning Lamborghini Cup champions Donovan and Luciano Privitelio return to defend their title with a new team, Rexal Villorba Corse. Like last year, they are expected to face stiff competition from ASR’s Paolo Biglieri and Petar Matić. Additionally, Art-Line’s Shota Abkhazava is determined to secure another class title for his resume. In the LB Cup, stalwarts Alfredo Hernandez Ortega from BDR Competition, Serge Doms of DS Racing, and the duo Jason Keats and Charlie Martin from Brutal Fish Racing are all in contention for the podium. Meanwhile, British driver John Seale is poised to make his Super Trofeo Europe debut with Iron Lynx.

The weekend at a glance

Given the substantial number of entries for the opening round, the championship organizers have opted to split the qualifying sessions by class to reduce congestion on the track. Consequently, Pro and Pro-Am vehicles will share a qualifying slot, as will Am and Lamborghini Cup cars, with each session spanning 10 minutes.
